Environmental Internship Placement Program

The Institute’s Internship program extends our mission to the leaders of tomorrow, by equipping students with the skills they need to become the sustainability practitioners of the future. We believe that educational experiences outside of the classroom serve to enhance the academic experience of students, as much as traditional course work. It is especially important that students with an interest in sustainability have exposure to government agencies, nonprofits, and private businesses so that they become familiar with the variety of entry points into the sustainability movement.

Since 2007 The Institute for Sustainable Cities has offered internship placement assistance to CUNY students. Open to all fields of study and levels of experience on both the undergraduate and graduate level, our Internship Coordinator guides students in their search for internships that relate to protecting the environment and promoting sustainability. Our Internship Coordinator meets one-on-one with student to assess their interests, skills and goals in order to find the right position from our database of over 100 agencies, businesses and organizations seeking interns. The coordinator then works closely with the student, guiding them through the application process in order to maximize their chances of securing the position. Following placement, the coordinator maintains contact with both placed interns and hosting organizations to ensure satisfaction on behalf of both parties. We are constantly striving to improve this valuable program.

If you are interested in internship placement assistance please contact our Internship Coordinator, Alexandra Hanson at internships@cunysustainablecities.org. Please include a copy of your resume, a short paragraph describing your professional and academic interests and times that you are available to meet in your e-mail.

CISC 2010 Summer Internships

Summer 2010 Cities by the Coast Internship

The CUNY Institute for Sustainable Cities (CISC) was founded in 2006 on the belief that, in moving cities toward sustainable practices, we will ensure that they continue as vibrant cultural, economic and residential centers. We believe that participation is essential to sustainable urban development. An important component of our mission is to educate, engage, and empower our communities with the knowledge they need to contribute to the creation of a sustainable cityscape.

Internship Description

New York City is an urban archipelago with the Hudson River, Long Island Sound, and the New York Bight bathing our four island boroughs and one peninsular borough. The CISC “Cities by the Coast” program explores the history and current state of New York City’s waterways, as well as the possibilities for their future.

The waters of the New York City region have played host to non-native species since the advent of European exploration. These colonizations have included numerous algae, plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates. Some have been purposeful, others accidental. More appear annually, despite greater efforts at control. Some colonizations are apparently benign while others are problematic.

Goal of Internship

The goal of the internship is to produce a master annotated list, with references, of all known colonizations by aquatic non-native species in the New York City region. A scheme will be developed to rate their ecological effects. The resultant report will be posted on the CISC website and may be submitted for journal publication.

Intern Expectations

The intern can expect to gain experience, knowledge, and connections to stakeholders related to water issues and invasive species in the New York City region. The internship is unpaid, although CISC staff can arrange for the intern to receive college credit for their work.

Requirements

The intern is expected to work the equivalent of 8 weeks for 2 to 3 days per week, although the hours may be distributed differently, and will be in contact with CISC advisors on a regular basis.

The intern must have one of the following qualifications (a) have a Masters degree in a related subject; (b) be enrolled in a Masters program in a related subject; or (c) be enrolled in an undergraduate program in a related subject. The intern should be a dedicated and independent-minded student with strong literature search skills and attention to detail.

Application

Interested applicants should send a resume and cover letter to Alexandra Hanson, CISC’s Internship Coordinator at internships@cunysustainablecities.org with Cities by the Coast Internship in the subject line.
