Smart Growth America is hiring a Communications Associate to contribute to our blog, social media channels, and press efforts. The Communications Associate will join a small, dynamic team involved in much of Smart Growth America’s work promoting vibrant, walkable neighborhoods. This is an opportunity that features a great deal of responsibility, direct collaboration with our supporters, and valuable hands-on experience.

Position description
An ideal Communications Associate will be someone interested in connecting with people who support our cause, and bringing them together around our work. We are looking for an exceptional writer and editor who is media-savvy and tapped in to news about Washington politics and smart growth development. A great Associate will be able to use all these those skills to create engaging content for Smart Growth America’s website, email blasts and social media networks. A great Associate should be a dependable team player who can perform regular, detail-oriented duties while also being proactive and offering new ideas for how to make the Communications team’s work even better.

Responsibilities
The Communications Associate’s primary responsibilities include:

• Writing, formatting, and sending HTML email blasts;
• Maintaining and growing Smart Growth America’s social media channels;
• Writing compelling content for our website and email lists;
• Assisting with report releases;
• Building relationships with reporters and bloggers;
• Copyediting;
• Communicating with and organizing our member organizations.
• This position may also help manage grants, draft policy papers and toolkits, and prepare workshops.
• Graphic design skills are a definite plus.

Requirements
Candidates should have a basic understanding of HTML, and proficiency using a web CMS and constituent management database. Candidates should have a solid understanding of how non-profits use social media. Experience with the Adobe Design Suite and CSS are a definite plus.

Candidates should have at least a bachelor’s degree and should be highly computer literate. A demonstrated interest in smart growth, economic development, transportation, community growth or related areas is encouraged.

Compensation, location and time frame
Salary commensurate with experience. This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC. Benefits include health insurance, 401(k), and paid vacation and sick time. This position reports to the Communications Director.
